ICE enforcement and family separation in immigrant communities cause profound and long-lasting psychological harm. When a parent or loved one is detained or deported, families experience immediate crisis and ongoing trauma. Research and clinical experience show increased rates of anxiety, depression, PTSD, toxic stress, and attachment disruptions—especially among children affected by immigration enforcement.
Children impacted by ICE raids and deportation often struggle with fear, sleep disturbances, emotional dysregulation, academic decline, and separation anxiety. Caregivers face chronic stress, grief, and uncertainty, frequently compounded by barriers to accessible, culturally responsive mental health care for immigrants.
As a licensed mental health provider serving immigrant families, I have witnessed how the trauma of separation does not end when detention occurs—it continues through prolonged uncertainty, legal challenges, and systemic fear. Many families avoid seeking therapy due to immigration-related fear, stigma, language barriers, or lack of affordable services.
Building a Pro-Bono Mental Health Network for Immigrant Families in Oregon
In response to this urgent mental health crisis, I reached out to mental health providers in Oregon to ask for support. The response was extraordinary. Therapists, counselors, and clinicians across the state stepped forward with solidarity and compassion.
We now have 20 licensed mental health providers offering pro-bono therapy services for immigrant families affected by detention, deportation, and ICE family separation. These providers offer trauma-informed, culturally sensitive mental health support, ensuring care is grounded in dignity, trust, and community values.
While our long-term goal is to expand this mental health initiative nationwide, we are intentionally beginning in Oregon, where strong partnerships and coordinated care can create an effective, scalable model.
Collaborating With Frontline Immigration and Legal Support Organizations
Mental health support must work alongside immigration legal services and community advocacy organizations. We are actively collaborating with:
Immigration hotlines and rapid response networks
Organizations providing legal representation and deportation defense
Community groups sharing ICE activity alerts and safety planning resources
By integrating mental health services for immigrants into frontline response efforts, families can access emotional support while navigating legal and safety challenges.
Gratitude for Community Providers and Immigration Advocates
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to:
Mental health providers volunteering pro-bono therapy for immigrant families
Community organizations seeking collaboration and shared advocacy
Frontline legal teams and organizers supporting families during ICE enforcement
This collective effort demonstrates the power of community-based mental health care and immigrant-led healing initiatives.
SANAR App: A Mental Health and Community Resource Directory for Immigrants
To strengthen and sustain this work, we are developing SANAR, a dedicated app designed to support immigrant families.
SANAR will provide:
A centralized directory of mental health providers for immigrants
Access to pro-bono and low-cost therapy services
Connections to trusted legal, crisis, and community resources
Culturally responsive, trauma-informed care options
SANAR will serve as a safe, accessible entry point for families seeking mental health support after ICE detention or family separation.
Stay tuned. This platform is currently in development.
